Every time I come to Beijing I like to come to Tiananmen Square. I don’t feel like I have been to Beijing until I have visited the square. Obviously there is a huge amount of history here and today, the 20th anniversary of the uprising, the feeling is almost overwhelming. Access to the square is being tightly controlled with security scanning bags and police checking passports. Coincidentally, it was exactly 10 years ago today when I first visited the square. At the time it was being repaved and was completely blocked off from all visitors. We were here today at 7am while things were still quiet. I imagine there will be many visitors today.
